J&K: Leaders Urge Restraint

On August 11, 2013, the CPI(M)’s Jammu & Kashmir state secretary Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami and People’s Democratic Front chairman Hakeem Mohammed Yaseen have issued the following statement to the press from Srinagar.

WE feel seriously concerned over the deteriorating situation in Kishtwar and in other areas of Jammu region which led to the death of two people and destruction of property. We appeal to the people in general and political, social and religious organizations, and civil society in general, to come forward and act unitedly for restoration of peace and communal harmony in the affected areas.

Any sort of discord among different sections of society does not augur well with the time tested unity, communal ethos and brotherhood between different communities in the state.

It is time that all the secular democratic and enlightened forces must intervene effectively to prevent the situation from getting further deteriorated. We must ensure that communal and divisive forces of all hues do not succeed in dividing our people. The people must remain vigilant and should not allow themselves to get swayed by rumour-mongers and provocations of divisive elements inimical to peace and tranquility.

The administration must act and act firmly against elements desperate to disturb peace and harmony in the region.
