Sitaram Yechury at Ghadar Party

Centenary Celebrations

THE Ghadar Party Centenary celebrations organised by the Ghadar Memorial Foundation of America were held on July 13-14, 2013 in San Francisco, US. Sitaram Yechury, Polit Bureau member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and member of parliament was invited to inaugurate the celebrations.

The CPI(M), which derives inspiration from the Ghadar movement and its heroic fighters, passed a resolution in its 20th Congress held in  Kozhikode, Kerala, April 4-9, 2012, to observe the centenary of the  Ghadar movement throughout the country.

Sitaram Yechury had written to the government, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging upon the need for initiating the necessary steps for observing this important milestone in our freedom struggle. The government responded positively and released a postage stamp commemorating the Ghadar heroes. Upon a specific request made, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, referred to the Ghadar movement in his budget speech 2013-2014 and promised: “to mark the centenary of the  Ghadar movement, the government will fund the conversion of the Ghadar  Memorial in San Francisco into a museum and library”.

It is in this background that the celebrations in San Francisco are being observed in which Sitaram Yechury is participating along with the Indian diplomats, academics and other eminent dignitaries in the US.
