CPI(M) Demands Relief for Quake Victims

MEETING at Jammu on May 16, 2013, under the chairmanship of its regional secretary Sham Prasad Kesar, the Jammu regional committee of the CPI(M) expressed concern over the sufferings and difficulties faced by the earthquake victims in the erstwhile Doda district of Jammu & Kashmir. On this occasion, Kesar said it was the moral and legal duty of both the state and union governments to rehabilitate those suffering hardships due to the repeated earthquakes.

The CPI(M)’s regional committee demanded immediate steps like roofs, food, blankets, medicines and cash relief for the victims, immediate repair of school and hospital buildings etc. There must be a long term planning for these types of traumas because this area is an earthquake prone area. The party asked the administration to ensure that the people affected due to this earthquake get adequate compensation under the Disaster Management Relief Fund. The party also asked for extending required treatment to the injured people.

Another demand of the CPI(M) is that officials of the concerned departments must inspect all the government and private buildings which have been damaged due to this unfortunate incident and declare them unsafe as per the status and degree of damage caused to these buildings. This, the party said, is necessary in order to avoid any further human losses due to any man-made or natural calamity in future.
