Brutal lathicharge on Protest against Pankti Bheda

Demanding the abolition of Pankti Bheda, a custom where separate seating arrangements are made for Brahmins and non-Brahmins when meals are served at temples, the CPI(M) Karnataka state committee organised a protest at Sri Krishna Math in Udipi district on December 27, 2012.  A large number of people, including many women participated in the protest. Police resorted to brutal lathicharge on the protesters. Eight people sustained serious head injuries. More than 300 people were arrested and taken to Reserve Police headquarters.
