Govt Employees to Carry out Territory-Wide Campaign

As a part of the proposed campaign on a 14-point charter of demands submitted to the government of India by the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers at New Delhi,  the Non-Gazetted Government Officers’ Association in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (A&N) organised on June 30 a union territory level convention at  the Hotel ACC in Mohanpura area of Port Blair.

Inaugurating the convention, B Chandrachoodan, general secretary of the CITU’s A&N state committee, blamed the central government for the deepening economic crisis in the country. He said the government has utterly failed to control prices in the country. 

Addressing the Convention, D Ayyappan (general secretary of the  Non-Gazetted Government Officers’ Association, who is also a member of the National Executive Committee of the said all-India Confederation), said the confederation has started a nationwide campaign among the central government employees on the 14-point charter of demands. He said that the central government employees would organise a March to Parliament on July 26, 2012, and on the same day a mass dharna would be held in front of the secretariat at Port Blair. He further said that on the conclusion of the proposed campaign the central government employees would stage a one day strike throughout the country either in the last week of September or in the first week of October 2012.              

T S Sreekumar, assistant general secretary of the association, explained in detail each of the 14 points in the charter of demands.

H L Prasad (vice president, South Andaman teachers’ branch of the association) also addressed the gathering. Earlier, Sadanand Rai (vice president of the association), who presided over the convention, welcomed the gathering. S Surender, vice president, proposed the vote of thanks. 

A large number of government employees and workers from various departments under the A&N Administration attended the convention. The latter decided to conduct a territory-wide campaign on the demands in July 2012 and later.
