CPI(M) Condemns Police Firing

THROUGH a statement issued from Srinagar on January 3, M Y Tarigami, secretary of the CPI(M)’s Jammu & Kashmir state unit, condemned the police firing on peaceful protestors in Boniyar area of Baramulla district. Terming the police action as unfortunate and uncalled for, Tarigami said peaceful demonstration is a constitutional right of all citizens, which has to be safeguarded and respected by the government. Use of force to quell peaceful and orderly demonstrations is condemnable, he added. “The government must do introspection and refrain from using force as a sole means to tackle issues,” he said, adding that such actions dent its own legitimacy. He reminded the government that people do not stage demonstrations unless they badly suffer.

The CPI(M) leader demanded an immediate magisterial enquiry into the firing incident in which one person was killed and two others were injured. Officials responsible for the incident must be identified and arrested, he insisted.
