SFI Protests Kerala Lathicharge

The Central Executive Committee of the Students’ Federation Of India (SFI) has issued the following statement on June 29:

THE Central Executive Committee of the Students’ Federation of India strongly protests the continuing police atrocities across Kerala on SFI activists protesting the UDF government’s unholy alliance with self financing college managements that are given free hand in deciding their fees and sabotaging merit in self financing professional colleges.

About 50 SFI activists in Thiruvananthapuram were seriously injured in the police lathicharge while they were on a peaceful strike in front of the secretariat. Police were let loose on the agitating students. Student leaders including K V Sumesh, state president, A A Rahim, state joint secretary, R Rajesh, MLA and Balamurali were brutally attacked and many of them had to be hospitalised.

There should be an immediate reversal of the policies of UDF to stop the commercialisation of education in Kerala.

The CEC of SFI calls upon all its units to protest this brutal attack and appeals to the student community to stand in solidarity with the students in Kerala protesting for their rights.
