CITU Demands Immediate Steps to Control Price Rise

ON December 19, the Jammu & Kashmir unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) held a big dharna in front of divisional commissioners office in Jammu. The aim was to express protest against the steep rises in the prices of essential commodities and on other issues facing the working class people. Jammu & Kashmir CITUs working president Javaid Zargar led the dharna.

Jammu & Kashmir CITUs general secretary Om Prakash, while addressing the dharna, said that the spiralling rise in the prices of essential commodities has broken the back of the common masses, especially the working class and low-income group population. Asking the central as well as state government to take immediate steps to bring down the prices of essential commodities, he said the situation needed to be dealt on a war footing. The working class people have been hit badly due to the rising prices of essential commodities, he said.

Javaid Zargar said that the labour laws must be strictly enforced and its violators must be taken to task by the administration. He stressed that a National Social Security Fund must be created to provide for a national floor level social security to all the unorganised sector workers including the contract and casual workers in line with the recommendations of the parliamentary standing committee of labour.

Shyam Prasad Kesar, Nirdosh Uppal, Pawan Gupta, Banarassi Dass, Raj Kumar and leaders from the unions affiliated with the CITU, among others, addressed the dharna and said that the central government must desist from disinvestment of central pubic sector undertakings (PSUs), which is bound to destroy the security of the working class people employed in these units.
