Kisan Victory

IN PUNJAB

THE All India Kisan Sabha(AIKS) and All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU) congratulated the struggling kisans and agricultural labourers of Talwandi Nau Abad in Ludhiana district of Punjab for securing the successful retraction of false cases against the innocent victims of police atrocities and the release of six of them from prison. The Punjab units of AIKS and AIAWU were also congratulated.

The struggle to punish the wrong doers responsible for the May 29 firing and destruction of property and to secure the land rights of Punjab abadkars will continue till these aims are achieved, stated S Ramchandran Pillai, president of AIKS and A Vijayaraghavan, general secretary of AIAWU in a joint statement issued on June 14, 2010.

It may be recalled that under the pressure of land mafia to evict the kisans and agricultural labourers settled since 1947 on Nikasi land of Talwandi Nau Abad, the Punjab police opened fire on the people on May 29 resulting in injuries to nine farmers, including four women. The police brutally attacked the people and foisted cases against 100 people. Six people were jailed under section 307. In such a situation, the farmers and agricultural labourers continued their agitation and forced the government to retract the false cases and release the arrested persons.
