SFI Condemns Brutal Lathicharge on Tamilnadu Students

The following is the statement issued by the Students' Federation of India on July 14, 2009.

The central executive committee of Students' Federation of India strongly condemns the brutal police lathicharge unleashed on its activists in Tamilnadu, when they were peacefully protesting for the implementation of the common and uniform school system in Tamilnadu.

The DMK government in the state has been a total failure in the field of education. Huge amount of donation and capitation fee is charged for an admission in schools and other higher level courses. To register their protest, the students in the state organised protest march towards the state assembly and sought an appointment with state education minister to submit a memorandum.  Police resorted to brutal attack on the agitating students with out any provocation. More than 50 students, including all the state committee members, were injured. The all India joint secretary of SFI, G Selva was also seriously injured and arrested. Many, including girls were beaten up seriously. False cases were registered on arrested leaders.

The central executive committee of SFI calls upon all its units to observe protest day on July 15, 2009. While strongly condemning the police attack, SFI, also demanded the Tamilnadu government to immediately withdraw the policies of commercialising education.
