MSP For Paddy Meagre: AIKS

THE All India Kisan Sabha registered its strong opposition to the announcement of meager amount of Rs 850 per quintal as minimum support price (MSP) for paddy.

K Varadha Rajan, general secretary, All India Kisan Sabha in a statement issued on June 13, 2008 said that this does not take into consideration the hike in prices of various inputs in recent months such as fertilizer, diesel, seeds etc.

He criticised the central government for not accepting even the recommendation of CACP - i.e. Rs 1000 per quintal. It is to be recalled that Dr Swaminathan Commission has recommended to fix MSP on average cost of inputs plus 50 per cent extra and the All India Kisan Sabha had also demanded the MSP of paddy be not less than Rs 1000 per quintal. It is strange to know that some BJP-led state governments had recommended lesser price for paddy.

AIKS demanded from the central government to revise this 'so-called ad-hoc' MSP and make it Rs 1000 per quintal for paddy for this kharif season. Any wavering on the part of the government regarding paying remunerative price to the farmers will not only increase the rate of suicides but endanger the food security of the country, the AIKS leader warned.
