AIDWA Welcomes Tabling Of Womens Reservation Bill

The All India Democratic Womens Association (AIDWA) has issued the following statement on May 6, 2008

AIDWA welcomes the introduction of the 33 percent Womens Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha. This is a direct outcome of the consistent struggle waged by all democratic sections, including the womens movement of India to secure their right to political representation in the highest decision making bodies.

Since the Bill has already been pending for 12 long years, and has already gone to a Select Committee, AIDWA appeals to the Standing Committee to which the Bill has been referred that it should finalise its recommendations after listening to all the proposals in a time bound manner, and return the Bill to parliament as early as possible. The women of this country await the redressal of the long standing discrimination which they have been subjected to. We call on all political parties and concerned sections to extend their support and co operation so that the passage of the Bill within a stipulated time frame is facilitated.
