Tripura LF Announces Candidates

List For Assembly Polls 2008

FURTHER creating a momentum in the ongoing electoral campaign of the Left Front throughout the state of Tripura, the Left Front committee has declared its list of candidates for the ensuing assembly elections likely to be held in February next year. Khagen Das, convenor of the Left Front committee released the list to the press at a crowded press conference convened by the Left Front leaders at CPI(M) State Committee office on December 25, 2007.

With 15 new faces, the party wise share of seats by the Left Front constituents are: CPI(M) – 55, CPI – 2, RSP – 2 and FB – 1 seat. Out of a total of 60 assembly segments, while names of 59 candidates found place in the declared list, name of the candidate for the lone seat allotted to Forward Bloc is yet to be decided. Four sitting MLAs, including a minister belonging to RSP, have been dropped this time. The number of female candidates this time has risen to five compared to three last time.

Among those present at the release of the candidates list were CPI(M) state secretary Baidyanath Majumder, Left Front convenor Khagen Das, state secretariat members of CPI(M) Gautam Das and Bijan Dhar, RSP state secretary Sudarshan Bhattachrjee and CPI state secretary Prasanta Kapali.

Among the sitting MLAs, Gunapada Jamatia of 30-Bagma(ST), Gourkanti Goswami of 41-Subroom and Ranjit Debnath of 43-Birganj, all of CPI(M) were dropped on health grounds and minister Gopal Das of RSP of 31-Salgarah(SC) has been dropped for his necessity in party organisation, the Left Front leaders informed the media.

Initiating the deliberations, CPI(M) state secretary Baidyanath Majumder said, “after cordial discussion among ourselves, we have decided not to make any change in the number of seats all along shared by the Left Front partners. As Forward Bloc was contesting from one seat in last several elections, so they were offered a single seat this time also. They did not inform their candidate as yet.”

After releasing the list of candidates, Left Front convenor Khagen Das said, the Left Front government had done much more than what was promised in the parties electoral manifestoes for the last elections. It could implement many more developmental projects and adopted many pro-people decisions. Therefore, he said, people would make the Left Front candidates victorious in all the 60 assembly seats. Citing the outcome of the consecutive elections that were held after 2003 assembly elections i.e parliament elections and panchayat elections in 2004, Agartala Municipal elections and Nagar Panchayat elections followed by TTAADC election in 2005 and village committee elections in ADC villages in 2006,  Khagen Das said, in all these elections the Left Front could consolidate its position in respect of percentage of votes polled as well as in terms of number of seats. While in the 2000 ADC elections Congress-INPT grabbed the ADC by unleashing unprecedented terror and depredations using the outlawed extremists in their favour, in 2005 ADC elections, they drew a blank. That apart, since 2003, till now about 56,000 families from opposition camp joined Left Front disassociating themselves either  from Congress party or INPT. So the Left Front’s aspiration to have a total victory this time has some genuine basis, Khagen Das asserted. He also appealed to all sections of the people, particularly women, to massively vote for the Left Front candidates.
