Buddhadeb Orders Judicial Probe,

CID Inquiry Into Kolkata Youth’s Death

BENGAL chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has called for a judicial probe into the death of a city youth recently. The Left Front government has already put in place an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Buddhadeb said that of the two probes, the judicial inquiry, led by a retired judge, ‘shall prevail.’ No one will be allowed any ‘protection’ or ‘cover’ through the process of inquiries, Buddhadeb has assured the people. The judicial probe will be completed within three months, said Buddhadeb recently.

The youth, Rizwan-ur Rahaman of the Tiljala-Topsia locale on the eastern fringe of the metropolis met with death when his body was found by the side of train tracks a few kilometres away from the city. The youth reportedly was in difficulty over his recent marriage to his friend and student Priyanka Todi, what with the girl’s family allegedly proving unwilling to accept the youth into their family.

The members of the departed young man’s family met Biman Basu, state secretary of the CPI(M) at the Muzaffar Ahmad Bhavan and Biman Basu assured them that the matter, grave and sad, ‘shall be well looked into.’ Several CPI(M) leaders went to the house of the youth’s family and expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the youth’s relations.

The leaders included Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M), Brinda Karat, as well as central committee members Mohd Salim and Shyamali Gupta. Other leaders were LF government ministers Abdur Rezzak Mollah and Abdus Sattar, and former government chief whip Rabin Deb.

Trinamul Congress has already launched itself into a full-scale gamut of mischief-making games over the incident, blaming the LF government for everything that has happened, and called for a CBI inquiry. (B P)
