CITU To Observe Sept 19 As Anti- Indo-US Nuclear Deal Day

The CITU secretariat released the following statement to press on September 2007

THE secretariat of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) in its meeting held on September 2-3, 2007 at New Delhi expressed grave concern over the anti-people approach of the UPA government on the major issues concerning life and livelihood of the mass of the workers and the common people unmindful of the widespread opposition from all sections of people against its policies in almost all fronts. The secretariat also expressed anguish over insistence of the government in the matter of Indo-US Nuclear deal which in its present form, in the context of Hyde Act, will subject India to become easy victim of US blackmail not only in the matter of nuclear projects but also in wider area of US imperialist hegemonistic design. Falling into such imperialist trap will have serious ramifications on our economic independence and political sovereignty.

The CITU secretariat, after detail deliberation of the issues has decided the following programmes:

Intensive countrywide campaign on the real face of the Indo-US Nuclear Deal and observance of “Anti- Indo-US Nuclear Deal Day” on September 19, 2007.

CITU delegation will meet the union labour minister within a few days to press for upward revision of the obsolete ceilings under Payment of Bonus Act as committed by the prime minister on August 19, 2006 and as assured by the labour minister in Indian Labour Conference (ILC) in April 2007. CITU will chalk out agitational programmes seeing the response of the labour minister.

As a follow-up of the massive countrywide strike on August 8 by the unorganised sector workers demanding comprehensive protective legislation, the next phase of agitation on the issue will commence with countrywide demonstration by the unorganised sector workers on October 31, 2007. Other details of the action programme will be drawn by the CITU Working Committee being held on October 6-8, 2007 at New Delhi.

CITU secretariat extended full support to the united countrywide strike programmes by the bank employees on September 12, 2007 and by the central and state government employees on October 30, 2007 on their pressing demands.

CITU secretariat also calls upon the working class, irrespective of affiliations, to join the united countrywide programmes of agitation drawn by the Sponsoring Committee of Trade Unions against the anti-people policies of the government culminating in countrywide satyagraha and jail-bharo on December 4-5, 2007.
