AIKS Demands Urgent Relief To Flood-Affected People

THE All India Kisan Sabha expressed deep sorrow at the loss of lives, properties, livestock due to heavy floods in Bihar, parts of Maharashtra, eastern UP, Assam and some other states. In a statement issued on August 04, 2007 AIKS general secretary K Varadharajan urged the central government to rush in essential supplies to the affected states at the earliest and help the concerned state governments with money, material and all other forms of assistance to enable urgent relief to the people to tide over the crisis.

The AIKS also demanded the concerned state governments to rise to the occasion and take all possible means for relief and rehabilitation of the distressed people.

In certain states, embankments, have been breached due to neglect and lack of repair. The AIKS stated that it is most regrettable that even after sixty years of independence, the central government as well as the state governments have not been able to conduct adequate scientific research to the cause of reassessing floods, which have become on annual affair and devise ways and means to check and control the rivers.

Every year, during the monsoon season of May to September, large parts of our country are affected by heavy floods inundating millions of hectares of cultivable lands, destroying crops, livestock and causing deaths to many people and displacement to lakhs and lakhs of inhabitants from their home and houses.

The AIKS noted that this year too, the state governments have failed to render proper and timely help and rehabilitation to the suffering millions in Bihar, UP, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The AIKS condemned the police firing on flood-affected distressed people who were demonstrating for relief and rehabilitation in Chakdah Mohallah of Madhubani district in Bihar. One person was killed and two seriously injured in the police firing. Many AIKS cadres have also been implicated in false cases for leading the protest. The All India Kisan Sabha condemned the state government of Bihar for the heinous attack and demands stoppage of all forms of repression.
