AIDWA & DYFI Condemn The Honour Killing In Haryana

LED by the member of parliament Varkala Radhakrishnan, a delegation of DYFI and AIDWA comprising Pushpendra Tyagi, M B Bharthruhari, Premchand (DYFI) Sudha and Jagmati Sangwan (AIDWA) met the National Human Rights Commission chairperson Justice Rajendra Babu in New Delhi on July 10, 2007. The delegation demanded that NHRC should immediately intervene in the incident of yet another ‘honour killing’ in the Kaithal district of Haryana. The couple who belonged to the same caste and same Gotra approached the High court fearing for their safety. The High court directed the police to provide them security. But due to the callous attitude and inaction of the police, the anti-social elements traced and caught the couple and eventually murdered them in a brutal manner on June 15, 2007. The bodies which were thrown in a canal were recovered fifteen days later, on June 30, 2007. The so called caste panchayat announced and implemented a social boycott of the boy’s family. Such incidents of heinous cruelty against young couples who dare to marry according to their choice have become common in Haryana. The DYFI and AIDWA while strongly supporting the right of the youth to make their choice demanded strict action against the culprits and the police for its inaction. The organisations also demanded that security should be provided to the boy’s family and steps should be taken to rehabilitate the family. (INN)
