‘Resist Neo-Liberal Policies’

May Day Celebrated At AKG Bhavan

THE working class of our country must resolve on this May Day to continue the ongoing struggle against neo-liberal economic policies and also to fight against all attempts to divide it on communal, casteist, and regional lines.

This was the call given by CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat at a function organised at Party headquarters A K Goplan Bhavan in celebration of May Day. Party members functioning from the centre and supporters gathered on this occasion. Polit Bureau members Sitaram Yechury, Brinda Karat and secretariat members V Sreenivasa Rao and Hari Singh Kang were present.

In his brief speech after unfurling the Red flag, Karat underlined that it was only the working class which can lead an organised resistance to the neo-liberal globalisation process being thrust on our country by successive regimes at the centre. He warned about the dangers of the pervasive influence of imperialism through this process and the consequent undermining of nation’s sovereignty. Referring to the communal forces, Karat called upon the working class to beware of the danger from these forces as they not only seek to divide the working class but also pose grave threat to the democratic polity of our country.

Karat congratulated the working class of Latin America on this May Day for waging great and successful struggles against neo-liberalism; the working class of Iraq for being still actively organised and fighting against US occupation; and the working class of Palestine for waging heroic resistance to Israeli occupation.

Later street theatre group ActOne staged a lively new play Phir Mayi Divas, written by Dr Brajesh and jointly produced with Jana Natya Manch. It was watched with keen interest by not only those gathered for the function – including Prakash Karat, Sitaram Yechury and Brinda Karat – but also by many passers-by. (INN)
