Nandigram MLA Attacked By Trinamul Goons

Bombs Thrown At The Left Front Rally

AT the end of the tether and desperate on seeing the popular base being rapidly and widely decimated, the Trinamul Congress went ahead to attack a Left Front rally held at Nandigram on April 27. Coming in from the nearby Hazarakata locality, a large gang of 60-odd armed Trinamul Congress roughnecks waded into a Left Front rally and started to lob bombs indiscriminately.

As people ran for cover and gun shots were heard, the hoodlums zeroed in on the CPI MLA of Nandigram, Iliyas Mohammad. He was kicked around, punched in the face and body, pushed to the ground, and beaten up thoroughly. He had a few broken teeth. His cell phone was snatched away and he was robbed of the five hundred-odd rupees he carried.

Biman Basu, CPI(M) state secretary and Bengal Left Front chairman has strongly condemned the attack and has said that such lumpen acts would further delay the peace process at Nandigram. The CPI leadership has condemned the incident. Iliyas Mohammad has lodged a formal complaint with the Nandigram police station over the attack.

Elsewhere in Nandigram, Trinamul Congress hoods tried to kidnap Jahangir Shah and Sakina Bibi from Garchakraberia. Both are scheduled to appear at the public hearing going on about the March 14 incidents at Nandigram. Being unable to do the misdeed, the Trinamul Congress goons shot Jahangir and fled. Jahangir and Sakina have expressed their determination to appear before the public hearing on the scheduled day.
