SC Interim Order Retrogade Says AIDWA

AIDWA issued the following press release on March 31, 2007

AIDWA views with great concern the Supreme Court interim order staying the OBC reservations in central educational institutions. This is an extremely retrograde move that will affect thousands of students who are from less privileged strata of society. The admission of girls from these sections will also be severely impeded. This is an injustice that goes against the tenets of equal opportunity enshrined in our constitution. It is extremely unfortunate that the highest court in the land is removing the few safeguards that ensured access for students from these backgrounds to higher education.

The reaction of many upper caste students to the Supreme Court ruling was very offensive and revealed their deep seated caste bias.

AIDWA demands that the government takes all steps to ensure that it safeguards the interests of these backward sections, and implements its earlier decision on reservation in higher education. (INN)
