ON January 28, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury released the special issues (January 22 to 28) of the party’s central weekly organs, People’s Democracy and Lok Lehar, at a press conference held at the party headquarters, A K Gopalan Bhawan. Speaking on the occasion, he said that, with their special numbers on the Republic Day, the two papers have now started a series on the history of our freedom struggle and that this series would continue up to their Independence Day numbers in August this year. Starting with an article on the First Indian War of Independence (1857) by eminent historian, Professor Irfan Habib, the series will be dedicated to the 250th anniversary of Plassey, 150th anniversary of the Uprising of 1857 and the birth centenary of revolutionary martyr Bhagat Singh, among other things.
On this occasion, Yechury informed the media about the CPI(M)’s independent efforts at the observance of the 1857 anniversary and Bhagat Singh birth centenary, while also appealing to the government to take these events with due solemnity and seriousness. He expressed astonishment over the fact that there was not a single eminent historian in the committee the UPA government has constituted for the purpose.
