of 958.84 acres. This process is still continuing.

PAYMENT OF COMPENSATION
So
far, i.e. upto December 31, 2006,
a total of 9839 cheques, for a total amount of about Rs. 83 crores, covering 658
acres have been disbursed. In order to make it easier for the landowners and
recorded bargadars to receive payment of compensation, Collector Hooghly has
arranged for payments to be disbursed from the office of the BDO, Singur, so
that the recipients do not have to go to the district headquarters in Chinsurah
to receive their payments. This practice will be continued for some more time.

ADDITIONAL
PAYMENT TO BARGADARS
The
Land Acquisition Act provides for payment of upto six times the net average
annual income from the land to recorded bargadars. In this case, WBIDC decided
to pay higher compensation to the recorded bargadars, to the extent of 25 per
cent of the amount of compensation paid to the owners of those lands.
