SFI Condemns Police Brutality On Students In Hyderabad

The Central Executive Committee of the Students’ Federation of India strongly condemned the brutal lathicharge on the students in Hyderabad on December 13, 2006. Around 100 students, including girl students, suffered injuries, with 10 of them severely injured. Broken scalps, bleeding faces and fractured hands was the scenario just few kilometers away from the state assembly building. Among those injured included SFI all India president R Arun Kumar and SFI AP general secretary Harikishore.

The students were taking out a massive, peaceful protest rally under the aegis of SFI AP state committee to highlight their demands –– disbursal of pending scholarships, revision of scholarship in tune with the rising prices, constitution of a high-level committee to monitor effective disbursement of scholarship to weaker sections and improvement of facilities in the Social Welfare hostels in the States.

Around 35,000 students turned out at the call given by the SFI AP state committee for this state-wide rally. They started their peaceful march from the Sundarayya Vignana Kendram and were proceeding to the Indira Park. The government which did not heed to the genuine demands of the students answered with a brutal lathi charge on the students who were staging a peaceful rasta roko.

The CEC of SFI demands the withdrawal of the non-bailable cases slapped on 100 student leaders and activists and warns the government of dire consequences if it continues with its repressive measures. It requests all the students and the managements to participate in the state-level bandh on December 15 condemning the police excesses on students.
