Prakash Karat Leaves For Cuba

PRAKASH Karat, general secretary of CPI(M), left for Havana to participate in the 80th birthday celebrations of Fidel Castro organised by the Guayasamin Foundation. Activities for four days – from November 28 to December 1 – are being organised to mark the occasion in the form of a symposium and cultural events. The celebrations will conclude on December 2, which is the 50th anniversary of the landing of the Granma Yacht which brought Fidel Castro and his band of revolutionaries to Cuba.

The celebrations are being organised to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Granma landing after the earlier programme in August was postponed when Fidel Castro fell ill. It is expected that a large number of leaders of Left and progressive movements from Latin America, prominent intellectuals including Nobel prize winners will participate. From India, A B Bardhan, general secretary of CPI, and Margaret Alva, general secretary of the AICC, will also be attending the programme. (INN)
