On Mullaperiyar Issue

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on November 24, 2006

The Polit Bureau welcomed the decision to hold a meeting on the Mullaperiyar issue on November 29 in which both the chief ministers of Kerala and Tamilnadu would participate.

In the Mullaperiyar issue, there are apprehensions about the safety of the dam in Kerala and the concern is about the requirement of water in Tamilnadu. What is required is an amicable settlement which will look after the interests of both the states.

Nothing should be done to worsen the situation in the form of blockades, picketings, demonstrations and counter demonstrations. The CPI(M) places utmost importance on the maintenance of friendly and fraternal relations between the peoples of the two states. There has to be a calm atmosphere in which the complicated issue can be discussed and resolved.
