CPI(M) Concerned Over Civilian Deaths In Sri Lanka

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on November 10, 2006.

THE continued military hostilities in Sri Lanka leading to the death of innocent civilians is a cause for deep concern. A number of Tamil people provided shelter in a camp in Vaharai have been killed in shelling by the Sri Lankan army. According to the government sources itself, 23 people died and 125 were injured in the attack. It is not enough for the Sri Lankan government to express regret over the incident. It has to ensure the safety of civilian lives and exercise restraint even in the face of provocations by the LTTE.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) calls upon the Sri Lankan government to take all necessary steps to enforce the ceasefire agreement and to protect the lives and provide security for the people in the North Eastern provinces.
