Trinamul Goons Kill CPI(M) Worker On Bandh Day

FRUSTRATED at the way the much-touted bandh had fizzled out, the Trinamul Congress goons of the Sonarpur-Langalberia area in south 24 Parganas, a few miles away from Kolkata, attacked CPI(M) worker and DYFI leader Comrade Mihir Mondal late in the afternoon of October 9. The assault took place in an isolated spot in the locality through which comrade Mihir was passing on his way back to his residence from the local CPI(M) office.

The killers who lay in ambush shot the young CPI(M) worker several times in the head and chest and then proceeded to slash away at him with sharp weapons. Deep lacerations and cut marks on his palms and forearms would indicate how he had desperately resisted the dozen-odd assailants who simply had him outnumbered. Comrade Mihir who had just turned 30 died on the spot.

Naren Pramanick, who accompanied Comrade Mihir, was shot in the chest and abdomen repeatedly by the goons, who are known to be in the pay and protection of the local outfit of the Trinamul Congress, as they fled the scene. Naren Pramanick in critical condition is battling for his life in a city hospital.

CPI(M) MP Sujan Chakraborty accompanied by CPI(M) MLA Ananda Biswas and by leaders of the local units of CPI(M) rushed to the spot. Sujan Chakraborty later said that Comrade Mihir, who was known for his popularity and his organisational ability, was the target of the Trinamul Congress hoodlums for some time now. South 24 Parganas district unit secretary of the CPI(M), Santimoy Bhattacharya has condemned the murder and has called for an early apprehension of the killers. (B P)
