J&K Floods: CPI(M) Demands Effective Rescue & Rehabilitation Measures

CPI(M) Jammu & Kashmir state secretary, Mohd Yusuf Tarigami, has urged upon the J&K state government to gear up rescue operations in the flood-hit areas, besides providing basic fortifications to the people in vulnerable areas.

Tarigami visited the flood-affected areas of Pulwama, Shopaian, Kulgam and Anantnag districts and took stock of the situation, which he described as “alarming”. People in the marooned areas are without food, shelter and clothing and the administration has not reached to the people as yet.

While interacting with the affected people in Ashmuji, Wanpoh, Khudwani, Qaimoh, Kanchoo, and many areas in H S Bagh, Shopaian, Ashtal, Adapora, Tarigami observed that the administration has not responded effectively to the situation, resulting in panic among the suffering people.

Tarigami expressed concern over the loss of property worth crores of rupees due to flooding in many areas of Devsar, Qazigund, Kulgam, Pahalgam, Melhurra, Wachi and Dachnipara. Dozens of villages in Kulgam and Anantnag districts are completely marooned. Tarigami asked for intensifying the rescue measures to save the marooned people in flood-hit areas. He urged for providing rescue boats to the disconnected people in flooded areas for saving precious lives.

Tarigami impressed upon the administration for concerted and coordinated efforts for rescue and rehabilitation purposes and shifting the marooned people to safer places. He demanded provision of free ration and tents for the displaced people and regretted that despite declaring a ‘red alert’, flood control department has failed to take any precautionary measures.
