Party Chalks Out Statewide Campaign

THE CPI(M) is organising an extensive one and a half month long statewide campaign on a 10-point charter of demands dealing with the burning issues of the country and a 4-point charter of demands concerning the people of Tripura. The decision was taken in the Party’s state committee meeting held on June 24-25, 2006. The campaign is being organised as part of the Party central committee’s call. The state committee has drawn up a detailed calendar of the campaign in three phases, spread over 45 days starting from the first week of July.

The two day state committee session started with condolence resolutions paying tributes to the memory of youth activist Comrade Arshad Ahmed Lone martyred in extremist attack in Jammu & Kashmir, youth activist Comrade Pranab Acharjee martyred in miscreant attack at Mohanpur in West Tripura, and those who lost their lives to the recent downpour at Dharmanagar in North Tripura.

The Party expressed grave concern and resentment over the Congress-led UPA government’s gross violation of the CMP. The prices of essential commodities have seen a sharp spurt through its straight 5-times hike in the petroleum products price over the past two years. Disinvestment of profitable public sector undertakings besides giving the multinationals a red-carpet reception in retail trade, and veering from the country’s independent foreign policy, as a junior partner of US imperialist through facilitation of its meddling in internal affairs are all anti people policies of this government. Threadbare discussions for implementing the Central Committee’s decisions were held in the state committee.

The Party sate committee has demanded the allocation of funds in the next rail budget for railway extension from Agartala to Subroom, allocation of fund for construction of an alternative national High Way in Tripura, immediate starting of the work of Monarchak and Palatana thermal power projects and the implementation of REGA in all the districts of the state.

A state level convention will be organised in Agartala on July 5 as part of the campaign. This will be followed by division level conventions between July 6 and 15, village, panchayat, nagar panchayat and municipal ward based conventions between July 16 and 31. Sub-division level rallies will be organised between August 1 and 12, and will culminate in a joint rally of all the West Tripura district’s divisions in Agartala on August 18. Rallies in all the block and Sub-division headquarters will be held on July 18 including a joint rally of the Sadar, Sadar-East and Bishalgarh divisions in Agartala. Besides, a telegraphic message will be sent to the prime minister to press for the passage of the Tribal Rights’Bill.

The Party state committee urged all its units to involve the widest section of the people in the propaganda campaign. The three phased campaign also includes fund-raising drive from the people in the first week of July aimed at expression of solidarity with the people of Palestine in accordance with the Party central committee resolution.
