CPI(M) Denounces Repression in Nepal

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on April 7, 2006

THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) denounces the crackdown by the King’s regime in Nepal against the movement to restore democracy. Hundreds of leaders and activists of the seven-party political alliance have been arrested throughout the country in connection with the four-day general strike.

The repression unleashed by the King will not deter the popular movement to end his authoritarian rule. The CPI(M) demands the release of all those arrested including the CPN(ML) general secretary, Madhav Nepal, who is in jail.

The government of India should demand an end to all repressive actions by the King, failing which, steps should be taken to make the King realise that he cannot continue with his present course of action.
