IN
discussion with Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the chairman of
the people’s council of Ho Chi Minh City agreed that in a bid to deepen
contact between the Ho Chi Minh City and Kolkata, there was urgent need to open
a consular office of Vietnam in Kolkata. As
a first step in this direction, Vietnam would open a commercial bureau in
Kolkata very soon.
Bengal
chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was recently in Vietnam at the invitation
of the Ho Chi Minh City people’s council over March 2-5, 2006.
During
the visit, discussions have led to several paths being opened for cooperation
between Vietnam and Bengal. Bengal
would receive assistance from Vietnam for research work in food processing and
marine food products.
Bengal
would provide technical assistance to Vietnam in information technology,
especially software, and in biotechnology.
The
Bengal chief minister was requested by the Ho Chi Minh City administration to
ensure a direct flight between Kolkata and Ho Chi Minh City.
The matter will subsequently be taken up with the union government. (B
