On MCD’s Demolition Drive In Delhi

The demolition of illegal commercial and residential constructions in authorised colonies of "respectable citizenry", being carried out by MCD was long overdue, felt the CPI(M) Delhi state committee. It is another matter that the High Court has virtually forced the MCD to act, it stated.

In a statement issued on December 22, CPI(M) state secretary P M S Grewal felt that the hue and cry raised over such demolitions by the BJP and Congress exposed the complicity of their MLAs and corporators in these illegal constructions. "The fact that the Congress and BJP have joined forces to pass a resolution in the Delhi assembly demanding an end to the demolition drive shows the deep nexus between their elected representatives and the builder mafias. The Congress and BJP never found it fit to pass any such resolution when lakhs of hapless jhuggi dwellers were being bulldozed out of this city for their crime of being poor. Now that their class is at the receiving end they to are crying blue murder!" the statement noted.

The CPI(M) condemned the brazen attempts of the Congress and BJP to save illegal constructions of the wealthy and demanded that this demolition drive be continued and all illegal colonies of the rich and powerful like Sainik Farms and Anant Ram Dairy be brought under its coverage as primary targets. It also demanded that all MCD officials, police personnel and builders who connived in letting illegal structures come up in the first place must be brought to book. (INN)
