  CPI(M) Appeal For Funds For Relief Work in J&K

 

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on October 10.

 

WITH the scale of devastation and loss of lives unfolding in Jammu & Kashmir due to the earthquake, it is imperative that all efforts are made to provide immediate relief and to organise rehabilitation for the thousands who are affected.

 

The Polit Bureau calls upon all the Party units to collect money for relief work in Jammu & Kashmir. The Polit Bureau has sent Rs 5 lakhs to the CPI(M) state committee of Jammu & Kashmir to start relief activities. It has also allocated another Rs 5 lakhs for blankets to be purchased and send to the state immediately.

 

Earlier, the Polit Bureau issued the following statement on October 8:

 

The earthquake which has affected parts of Pakistan and India has caused widespread damage and loss of life. The brunt of the earthquake in India has been borne in Jammu & Kashmir. There are reports of extensive damage in Uri town, Baramulla and other places. The Polit Bureau conveys its heartfelt sympathy to the  families of all those who have lost their relatives.  The central government should immediately organise emergency relief and rehabilitation measures in the state. 

 

In Pakistan, it is reported that the destruction caused by the quake has led to heavy casualties with hundreds dead. The Polit Bureau extends its heartfelt sympathy to the people of the affected areas in Pakistan who have suffered a grievous loss in lives and property.
