'March To Assembly' In Assam
DYFI leaders at the head of the march in Guwahati
AT the call of the Assam state committee of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, a huge 'March to Assembly' was organised in Guwahati on September 15. This was a culmination of one month long campaign launched by the DYFI in the state on its 20-point charter of demands relating to the immediate concerns of the youth community of Assam. While raising the issues of ban on recruitment in central and state government’s services and spiraling growth of unemployment, the DYFI gave the slogan 'Employment and Development' for this march.
On September 15 more than ten thousand youth marched for two hours covering a distance of more than 12 km from Guwahati to Dispur where the state assembly is located braving the heat of more than 40-degree celcious.
Inaugurating the march in Guwahati, Tapas Sinha, all India general secretary of DYFI, explained that on the issues of employment and development, the performance of the Congress-led UPA government at the centre has been unsatisfactory. He cited the figures of five crore registered unemployed and 36 crore illiterates and 26 crore people facing the problem of hunger in the country and said the youth must come forward and mobilise the various sections of the society to achieve the demands of employment and development.
In Dispur, when the police stopped the march at the main gate of the state assembly, a public meeting was held which was addressed by Tapas Sinha, Gajen Burman, secretary of Assam state committee of DYFI, Bipul Bordoloi, president of Assam state committee of DYFI and Nayan Bhuyan, secretary of Assam state committee of SFI. Addressing the meeting, the leaders explained the demands giving the details about the pathetic situation of employment and development in Assam. Raising the issue of ban on recruitment they mentioned that there are more than 11,000 vacancies in the North Frontier Railways alone. A delegation led by Tapas Sinha submitted a memorandum to the chief minister Tarun Gogoi. From this public meeting the youth leader also gave the call for the youth of the state to intensify their struggles.
