No. 33 August 14, 2005 |
The
Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following
statement on New Delhi, August 9, 2005.
THE
Justice Nanavati Commission Report on the violence against the Sikh community
has failed to do justice to the terms of reference assigned to the Commission.
The Commission’s report has failed to fix responsibility for the failure to
check the violence and pinpoint responsibility of those guilty of serious
crimes. After twenty-one years and nine commissions and enquiry committees, it
is a dismal state of affairs that justice cannot be rendered to the thousands
who suffered in the pogroms.
The
Action Taken Report submitted by the government is in all respects
unsatisfactory and does not even treat the limited recommendations seriously.
The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) demands that the government act on the specific
recommendations made by the Commission to proceed against certain persons named
and to probe the involvement of others whose culpability has been indicated by
the Commission. This is the least the government can do to assure the people
that justice will be done.
