  Social Scientist Remembers Comrade Biplab Dasgupta

 

RICH tributes were paid to the memory of Comrade Biplab Dasgupta, Marxist intellectual, member of the central committee of the CPI(M) and editor of Nandan at a meeting organised by Social Scientist on August 8, 2005 at New Delhi.

 

Speaking on the occasion Prakash Karat, general secretary of the CPI(M) and Sitaram Yechury member of the Polit Bureau narrated their interaction with the departed comrade and underlined his role in acting as the outpost of the CPI(M) in England.

 

Several faculty members from the Jawarharlal Nehru University where Comrade Dasgupta had undertaken a teaching assignment after his return from England also highlighted Comrade Biplab’s academic contribution, and the width of his interests in different areas, his teaching qualities, and popularity with students. Those who spoke of their association with Comrade Biplab included Professor G S Bhalla, Prof Amithabh Kundu and Prof Abhijit Sen, member of the Planning Commission. Suneet Chopra, member of the central committee of the CPI(M) also paid his tribute.

 

Prof Prabhat Patnaik, editor of the Social Scientist underlined the significance of the unity of action and theory in the personality of Comrade Biplab Dasgupta.

 

The meeting sent its condolences to Comrade Biplab’s wife comrade Aarti and his son.
