  Five Extremists Surrender, Face Reprisals

ON May 25, five ATTF and NLFT (BM) extremists surrendered to the security forces at two different places in Chhaygharia, Madnai in West Tripura district and Manikpur, a far-flung locality of Longthorai Valley in Dhalai district.

Arun Debbarma (alias Zinda) and Amarendra Debbarma  (alias Kakla), both hardcore ATTF extremists, surrendered at the TSR Second Battalion’s headquarters at Chhaygharia. They laid down 2 AK-66 rifles, 2 bayonets, 6 magazines and 105 rounds of bullets before the security official.

At Manikpur in Longthorai Valley, three NLFT(BM) extremists, namely Infarson Halam, Parendra Debbarma  and Paritosh Debbarma, surrendered to the Manikpur police outpost. They skipped out of an extremist hideout in Bangladesh and handed over to the police one grenade, 4 detonators and some explosives.

The surrendered extremists vividly narrated the sordid plight of their life and livelihood in the camp during the years gone by. Taking the opportunity of a stormy night, they deserted the camp and rushed to the Indian side to meet the security forces for surrender. They informed the media persons that they were disillusioned about the ‘independent Tripura’ slogan which is nothing but totally hollow. Many of the extremist cadres in the Bangladesh camp have been suffering from deep frustration and they were desirous to come to the mainstream to lead a normal live. They also informed that serious group clash were taking place inside the camp over the share of booties they snatched from the people.

On the same day, some ATTF extremists kidnapped the father, mother, and sister of Arun Debbarma from their house at Chhaygharia. Though Sukhu Debbarma, father of Arun Debbarma, could manage his escape, the extremists abducted the other two.  The police, soon after their surrender, had jumped into action to remove the family members of the surrendered extremists in a safer place anticipating a reprisal of the extremists. Though family members of the other surrendered could be saved, those of Arun Debbarma could not be saved because the extremists had abducted them before the police reached to their rescue. Police is making all out efforts to search them out and rescue them unhurt. (INN)
