CPI(M) Demands Protection For Women
THE
Delhi state committee of CPI(M) expressed its shock and anger at the spate of
rapes in Delhi. In a statement issued on May 10, the Party noted that not a day
passes without heart-rending reports of rapes against young women, children and
adolescents. It commented that the heinous rape of a college student two days
back was cruelly illustrative of the fact that Delhi is indeed the rape capital
of India as well!
Criticising
the Delhi police for not apprehending the rapists in this case for hours after
being informed, the Party held both the Delhi police and the central government
under whose control it functions squarely responsible for this situation. “The
attitude of the police in such matters ranges from callousness to complicity.
The home ministry makes mandatory noises of concern, conveniently forgotten in
practice till the next instance that finds prominence in the press”, the
statement noted.
The
CPI(M) Delhi state committee made the following demands:
Police
officers responsible for the criminal delay in acting to apprehend culprits
in the recent case of rape of a college student be suspended immediately and
brought to book for their actions.
Thanas
and their officers be made accountable for such crimes taking place in areas
under them. Any laxity on their part should invite disciplinary action
against them.
The
Delhi police must ensure more regular patrolling as well as prompt response
to reports regarding rape.
All
out efforts be made to apprehend rapists at the earliest and ensure the most
stringent punishment to them.
The
home ministry regularly monitor performance of the police on crimes against
women and ensure safety of women in the capital.
The
Party also appealed to organisations of different sections of the people,
political parties and ordinary citizens to raise their powerful voice and force
the police and central government to protect the women of Delhi against this
barbarous crime and their inhuman perpetrators.
In
a joint statement, the Delhi state committees of AIDWA, CITU, SFI, DYFI have
also strongly condemned the heinous rape of a college student and demanded
stringent punishment for the guilty. (INN)
