Surjeet’s Condolence Message

Following is the text of the condolence message written by Harkishan Singh Surjeet in the Condolence Book kept at the Palestine Embassy in New Delhi on November 13

THE Communist Party of India (Marx ist) pays respectful homage to the memory of Yasser Arafat, president of Palestine and the chairman of the PLO. In his six-decade long struggle for emancipation of his people and securing them a homeland, Arafat symbolized the hopes and aspirations of not just the Palestinian people but the entire anti- imperialist people’s movement. Yasser Arafat was able unite the different streams and factions of the Palestinian movement and build a strong unified center of resistance to the Israeli Zionist occupation.

On behalf of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), I salute the memory of this hero, who despite the severe odds and adverse international conditions of the past decade, fought the Zionist regime and its imperialist backers with all his might, not once succumbing to pressure.

In his death I have suffered a personal loss. There was a special warmth in his relations with me and the CPI(M).

AIKS & AIAWU

THE All India Kisan Sabha and All India Agricultural Workers Union share the deep sorrow of the Palestinian people at the sad demise of president Yasser Arafat. He was a powerful symbol not only for an independent Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital, but also for the worldwide brotherhood of those who have consistently fought for human rights being daily violated by imperialism and its Zionist allies.

The heroic resistance put up by president Arafat under siege of the Israeli state in these last few years is a shinning example of what a human being can achieve in the face of the most savage inhumanity. This non violent resistance of his is as inspiring to all forces fighting inhumanity as the unforgettable victory the Al Fatah scored at the battle of Al Karameh, which was the first major defeat of the state of Israel. It was under his leadership of both the PLO and of the Palestinian authority that we saw the birth of the Palestinian homeland once more on Palestinian soil. His contribution to the liberation of Palestine was second to none. We are sure the Palestinian people, their institutions and organisations will carry forward his message of struggle until victory to its successful conclusion and make his dream reality.

Our heartfelt condolences to Al Fatah, the PLO and Palestine on the sad demise of Abu Ammar, president Yasser Arafat.
