On The Attacks in Nagaland and Assam

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on October 3, 2004.

THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) expresses deep shock and condemnation of the two bomb blasts in Dimapur, Nagaland which have killed 24 people and injured many others. The premeditated manner in which the bombs were placed at the railway station and market, shows the aim of these attacks is to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the state. The state government and the centre should spare no effort to identify the culprits and apprehend them.

In Assam, suspected NDFB militants staged attacks in a number of places killing 19 people and injuring many. The worst incident was in a market in Dubri where 11 people were killed. All attempts to foment ethnic conflicts through such violent attacks have no support from the common people. The growing trend of extremist groups resorting to indiscriminate violence in Assam must be countered by firm action and popular mobilisation to isolate them.

The Polit Bureau conveys its heartfelt condolences to all the families who have suffered a grievous loss through these attacks. The central government should immediately convene meetings with the concerned state governments and other authorities in the North East to work out a strategy to counter these disruptive activities.
