Bengal
Left Front Announces Names
The Bengal Left Front has announced the names of its candidates for the three Assembly by-elections to be held on October 9. Three seats of Shyampukur, Jorabagan, and Entally fell vacant when winning Bengal Left Front MLAs contested and won seats to the Lok Sabha.

chairman Biman Basu said that in the upcoming by-elections Forward Bloc would
contest from the Shyampukur seat whilst CPI(M) candidates would contest from
Jorabagan and Entally. The Forward Bloc candidate is Jiban Saha. The CPI (M)
candidates are: Parimal Biswas from Jorabagan and Abu Sufiyan from Entally.
In
the last Lok Sabha polls Shyampukur MLA, Subrata Basu of the Forward Bloc
contested and won from the Barasat Lok Sabha seat. The CPI (M) MLA from
Jorabagan, Sudhangsu Sil, ran and won from the Kolkata northwest. The CPI (M)
MLA from Entally, Mohd Selim won from the Entally constituency.
Abu
Sufiyan is a councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation from ward 54. He has been an elected KMC councillor from 1995. A member of
the Kolkata district unit of the CPI (M), Sufiyan has been an activist in the
civic movement and the mass health movement for a long period of time. He is
leading worker in the Kolkata Nagarik Sammelan and the Kolkata Bustee
Federation. He is also associated with various social organisations.
Parimal
Biswas, a KMC councillor from ward 21, has been representing the ward for all of
two decades. He is also associated for a great length of time with the working
class and civic movements of the Jorabagan area. An activist-organiser of the
unorganised workers, he is associated especially with the Mutia-mazdoors (head
load carriers) of the Posta area. Biswas is a member of the Jorabagan-II local
committee of the CPI (M). He is
like Sufiyan associated with various social organisations.
Jiban
Saha, who runs from Shyampukur, is the Kolkata district secretary of the Yuva
League, the youth wing of the Forward Bloc. (INN)
