RESPONDING
to the call of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), women in
the entire state of Tripura observed August 24 as National Demands Day. They
campaigned in favour of the seven-point demands.
From
Dharmanagar of North to Sabrum of South, Longtoraivaly of Dhalai, and Sonamura
of West, in every sub-division women participated in good numbers in the
rallies, gatherings and meetings organised as part of observing this day.
The
campaign concluded with a clear warning to the Congress-led UPA government to
take prompt action to fulfill the demands, or else face bigger movements in the
near future.
The demands included passing of Women Reservation Bill, declaring a policy with 40 per cent women reservation in employment, adoption of law against the family violence against women, strengthening the public distribution system, calling for halts in attacks on secularism, allocation for the women in the central budget, to declare the change in population policy with a common minimum programme.
The concluding rally passed through different streets of Agartala and ended with a massive meeting. In her speech, Rama Das, general secretary of Tripura state committee asked for strengthening the movement for the seven point demands in the near future. Amongst other leaders Rupa Ganguly, Ramani Debbarma and others spoke on the occasion. The meeting was presided over by Chaya Baul.
The speakers gave importance to strengthening the organisation for safeguarding the women’s rights and protecting labour.
Bishalgarh,
Sonamura, Fatikroy, Longtoraivally, Udaipur rallies passed through different
streets and finished with well attended meetings. (INN)
