THE
Delhi Union Of Journalists (DUJ) has urged the union cabinet to help ensure a
wage board for the newspaper industry, relieve journalists from the bondage of
contracts and stagnation, and regularise working conditions in the entire
industry from the print to the electronic broadcast.
At
an emergency, extended meeting on the budget eve on July 7, the DUJ executive
committee welcomed the growing unity between press workers and journalists, and
asked for a media commission on the lines of the first and second press
commissions. According to a joint press note issued by DUJ president S K Pande
and general secretary Javed Faridi, the meeting further opined that the outdated
Working Journalists Act must be amended to ensure checks on arbitrary hire and
fire.
The DUJ has resolved to observe a wage board day towards the end of this month and letters have already been sent to the prime minister and members of parliament to apprise them of the DUJ’s viewpoint. Letters of solidarity were being received from a variety of trade unions. (INN)
