Karnataka: DYFI Holds State Level Workshop

THE Karnataka state committee of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) organised a 6-day state level study class cum organisational workshop from June 20 to 25, with 84 members from 18 districts participating in it. It was held at Bajal in Dakshina Kannada district.

Ideological and political classes on dialectical materialism, historical materialism, political economy, communalism, caste problem, imperialism, war and terrorism were organised. Classes on history of Indian youth movement and challenges ahead as well as on world youth movement and organisation were organised.

The participants divided themselves into 6 groups to enable them to discuss various aspects of organisation such as mass membership, units and committee functioning, fund mobilisation, multifarious activities, organisation among various sections of youth, literature sale, struggles, intervention and mobilisation on the last two days. DYFI general secretary Tapas Sinha summed up the discussions and conducted a class on the world youth movement and organisation building. DYFI joint secretary Pradeep delivered the valedictory address.

A renowned intellectual of the state, Professor K Ramadas inaugurated the workshop on June 20. He hailed the people of India for ousting the BJP and NDA out of power by their decisive verdict. At the same time, he expressed grave concern on the BJP’s emergence as the single largest party in the state assembly elections. Hailing the DYFI’s activities in countering the communal forces, he asked its members to further their activities and widen the mass base of their movement. Analysing the development of majority communalism and the BJP’s emergence, he criticised the imposition of emergency by late Smt Indira Gandhi, the limitations of the J P movement and its weaknesses that enabled the Jan Sangh led communal forces to have a role in national politics. CPI(M) state secretariat member K R Shriyan and DYFI state secretary Mahantesh also spoke.

The Bajal unit of the DYFI organised on June 25 a youth rally and public meeting to observe the second anniversary of Comrade Srinivas Bajal’s martyrdom day. An active cadre of the DYFI’s Bajal unit and cultural secretary of the Pakkaladaka Yuvaka Mandala, Comrade Srinivas Bajal was brutally murdered by Hindu Yuva Sena goons at Bajal on June 25, 2002, when he was on his way to hospital in order to donate blood for a patient. Addressing the public meeting, DYFI general secretary Tapas Sinha dwelt at length on the problems of education and employment facing the Indian youth and the role of the successive union governments in aggravating these problems. He also touched upon the threat posed by the communal and divisive forces to the unity of Indian youth and the valiant struggles waged by the DYFI in defence of secularism and national unity.

On the day, Srinivas Bajal memorial gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to the top three scorers of highest marks in SSLC; these students belonged to the local schools. At the public meeting, annual fee amounts were also given to 75 students who were members of the Pakkaladaka Yuvaka Mandal cultural troops and are studying in various classes in  local schools. CPI(M) state secretariat member B Madhav reminded the significance of June 25, as the day the emergency was imposed. DYFI state committee president K N Umesh presided. Its state secretary K Mahantesh, reception committee chairman Yashwant Muroli, Krishnappa Konchadi, Yadava Shetty, district DYFI president Sunil Kumar Bajal and secretary Ashok Konchadi, town committee president Muneer Katipalla and secretary Santosh Neetinagar were also present, among others.
