 CP ISRAEL STATEMENT

Escalation In The North:

 Another Recipe For Failure

In a statement issued on October 7, the CP Israel condemned the Sharon government’s provocation towards Syria and warned against dragging the peoples of the region into a full-scale war.

THE Communist Party of Israel warns against the plans of the Sharon government to destabilise the situation along the northern border in order to distract the Israeli public’s attention from the policy of force against the Palestinians, as well as to aid the aggressive policies of the Bush administration.

The attack by the Israeli air force on a training camp near Damascus, the first of its type in 20 years, is an expression of the stalemate reached by the right wing’s policy of brutal occupation. After three years of particularly violent repression of the Palestinian people, it is clear to all that Sharon’s policies are bringing a disaster to both peoples, the Israelis and the Palestinians. A further painful confirmation of the catastrophic nature of the occupation was the attack on the “Maxim” restaurant. The CP Israel condemns the attack, whose victims this time were Jews and Arabs, children and pensioners. The suicide attacks hurt the chances for peace and cause great damage to the Palestinian struggle for national independence.

The aerial attack on Syria, as the assassinations, closures and destruction in the occupied territories, are an invitation for military escalation, increased bloodshed, and will in no way bring peace and security to the people. The CP Israel emphasises that the aerial attack on Syria received the blessing of the Bush administration. The American government rushed to announce that it would veto any denunciation of Israel that would be brought up at the UN Security Council.

Bush’s position is not surprising as the attack on Syria under the pretence of the “war on terror,” serves the aggressive global policies of the American government and its offensive plans against certain nations, including Syria. As the Sharon government hides behind its attack on Syria to conceal its failure to crush the Palestinian people, so the US would like to increase the tension concerning Syria to hide its growing entanglement in Iraq.
