ASSAULT ON NURSE
THE
All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has called upon the Delhi
government to cancel the registration of the license given to the Shanti Mukund
Hospital on grounds of criminal negligence and violation of minimum medical
ethics. This is the hospital where a young nurse was criminally assaulted and
had her eye gouged out by the assailant. The private hospital authorities had
not only sent the victim back to her home in a terribly injured condition, but
had also demanded Rs 7000 as deposit if she wanted to be treated there. This is
the ultimate example of criminal callousness. Strong and salutary action has to
be taken against such institutions, more so when there is a proliferation of
private hospitals all through the city’s, with little or no accountability. The AIDWA said it is also moving the Medical Council of India
on this issue. The AIDWA has also decided to organise a protest demonstration
against the hospital on September 16.
Issued
on September 12, AIDWA statement welcomed the prompt action of the Delhi Police
in adding Section 307 (attempt to murder) to the charges, after an AIDWA
delegation comprising Brinda Karat, Kalindi Deshpande, Ashalata, Shanti Devi and
others made such a request at a meeting with the DCP September 11.
The
AIDWA has also urged the Delhi government to immediately give financial help to
the victim who is the only earning member of her family. The victim told the
AIDWA team that she has to pay back loans and at present is paying over Rs 6000
a month just on interest. Since she will be unable to resume work for some time,
it essential that some financial help is given to her.
The
AIDWA urged upon the citizens of Delhi to come forward to help this brave young
woman through donations to help her, and also join the demonstration. All those
who want to make a contribution to her may contact the AIDWA office. (INN)
