CPI(M) Observes Anti-Imperialism Day on August 15

THE CPI(M) observed the Independence day on August 15 as anti-imperialism day all over Andhra Pradesh to highlight the growing danger to our economic independence from imperialism and the anti-people policies of the  central and state  governments which are  allowing themselves to be subjected to increasing pressure from the imperialists.  Highlighting the dangers coming from imperialism and multinational corporations, and the need to fight against them, the CPI(M) took out a procession on August 15 from the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in  Secunderabad to the statue of the revolutionary martyr Alluri Sitaramaraju at Tankbund.

Holding a banner denouncing pro-imperialist policies of the central and state governments, leaders, cadres and sympathisers of the Party participated in the procession.  The depiction of dangers of imperialism  and the resounding slogans against imperialism attracted the attention of the people on both sides  of the busy thoroughfares through which the procession went ahead. Artists and others attired in fancy dresses, projecting American imperialism, the IMF, the World Bank, WTO, MNCs, Pepsi and Coca Cola as demons, vehicles depicting the TDP and BJP-led NDA governments carrying the American imperialism on palanquin and other forms of art, exposing  the rapacious nature of imperialism, were highlights in the procession.

Addressing the participants, B V Raghavulu, state secretary of the CPI(M), expressed concern over  the increasing pressure of the imperialists on Indian political and economic system. He castigated the central and state governments for surrendering to the pressures of the World Bank and causing serious damage to the interests of the people. The Vajpayee government was trying to send our armed forces to Iraq through the backdoor; it had already sent some of them in the name of setting up a military hospital in Iraq, said Raghavulu. He requested the government not to surrender to the pressures from the US.  He also pointed out that the government was not bothered about exceeding pesticide levels in soft drinks of the multinational companies like Pepsi and Coca Cola thereby causing injury to the health of the people.  While the implementation of economic reforms by the central and state governments was seriously affecting the interests of the people, the judgement of the Supreme Court against the right of the government employees to go on strike was atrocious, said Raghavulu.

P S N Murthy, secretary of the Hyderabad city committee of the CPI(M), said the Party was going to take up a programme of campaign from August 25 to enlighten the people on the failures of the central and state governments in different fields.  Y Venkateswara Rao, state secretariat member of the CPI(M), S Narasimha Reddy, G Rambabu, Srinivas and several other leaders of the city unit of the Party participated in the programme. They garlanded the statue of Sitaramaraju. (MVR)
