New Leadership of AIAWU
THE
fifth conference of All India Agricultural Workers Union that was held at
Thrissur from 4-6 April 2003 elected an 89-member general council with three
seats vacant and a central working committee of 30 member (with 1 place vacant).
6 from Kerala (5 men, 1 women), 6 from the Centre, 4 from Andhra Pradesh (3 men,
1 woman), two each from Bihar, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and UP. One each from
Haryana, Karnataka. Maharashtra, Orissa and Rajasthan.
The
office bearers are as follows. P Ramayya (President); A Kanaran, Chand Singh
Chopra (Vice Presidents); A Vijayaraghavan (General Secretary); Suneet Chopra,
Hannan Mollah, Sarangdhar Paswan (Joint Secretaries); Harkishen Singh Surjeet
and S Ramachandran Pillai are Secretariat members.
The
broad breakup of the delegates who attended the conference is as follows. A
total of 561 delegates attended, 318 of whom were between the age of 41 and 60,
230 of them from agricultural labour families, 107 more from working class
families and 157 from poor peasant families, reflecting the sound basis of the
organisation on the ground.
