The
Martyrs of Al Aamariya or the Murderers in Washington?
The banner on the wall of the
Al Aamariya shelter reflects the agony of those who lost their dear ones in the
bombing by the US Air Force at 4.30 a m on February 13, 1991, killing 408
innocent civilians, almost all women and children, who had taken shelter there.
They were Iraqis, Arabs, Syrians, Jordanians, Egyptians. Those killed included
52 children under 5 years, 12 infants, 8 old men.
The first, a laser bomb, tore through a 2 metre thick concrete ceiling of the shelter. The second, which followed, was a napalm bomb, fired through the ventilation system, to finish off whatever was left, inside the shelter
