AFTER BRAZIL IT IS CYPRUS

AKEL-Supported Candidate Wins Presidency

 SUPPORTED by the Progressive Party of working People (AKEL) and some other progressive parties, Tassos Papadopoulos has won the presidential election in Cyprus, held on February 16. Papadopoulos polled 2,13,353 votes that come to 51.51 per cent of the valid votes polled. His nearest rival, Glafcos Clerides, trailed far behind, with 38.80 per cent of the valid votes. Clerides polled 1,60,724 votes.

The result comes as a significant victory for the AKEL and other parties that supported Papadopoulos. The new president will take the oath of office on February 28 in the House of Representatives, and then announce his council of ministers.

In the February 16 election, 4,31,690 voters exercised franchise out of a total of 4,76,758 registered voters. Details are awaited.
